Back in the Day - Heritage Lottery Project

Picture
Volunteers bought the Back in the Day project to a close with a special finale, which involved a trip to the Nuneaton Heritage Centre and Caldwell Grange Residential Home. Young people have been working on the Heritage Lottery funded project for the last six months, researching what work and entertainment was like in Nuneaton during the 40s and 50s.

They put their research on display boards, which were donated to the Heritage Centre. Chairperson Beryl Kirby said “We’re really pleased with the boards. The young people have done a great job researching the information and putting them together”.

The volunteers also facilitated a discussion group where eight people took part in interviews. Lorna Dewis was part of the group. She said “It was a pleasure to get involved. I enjoyed listening to other people’s memories – we could have gone on forever”

After finding out a lot of people went to dance halls fifty years ago, volunteers spent several weeks learning the waltz and the jive. They showed off their moves at Caldwell Grange at a special tea dance.

Members of the public can pop into the Heritage Centre in Avenue Road, Nuneaton to see the young people’s work. It is open every Tuesday and Thursday morning and every second Saturday of the month. 9.30 – 12.
